Sometimes you feel like a nut . . .

Delilah is named for a line in a Bob Dylan song. 'Tears from Laughter' was just too appropriate for the puppy who makes me laugh so hard I cry.

Delilah's nicknames: Lilah, Puppy D, Lilah Lu, D-Li, Puddin'

Delilah's song: Bob Dylan - "Tombstone Blues"

While still a wee pup running about with her litter-mates, Delilah made it pretty clear that she would be the one who stayed here - she was too full of mischief to pawn off. Not to mention the fact that she reminded me so much of her mum. At six months old, Delilah remains full of puppy nutterness and a trouble-making agenda, but she is also starting to develop the work ethic, focus, and trainability of her parents.  Delilah is hopelessly social and has yet to meet a man or beast who fails to become a fast friend.  She won over the rest of the pack in a few short weeks.  While graced with a typical Flat-coat sense of humor, Delilah is still learning how to channel it in ‘constructive’ ways (ie – those that don’t involve her reckless abandon of self-preservation instinct, the use of water bowls as props, the destruction of heritage rose bushes, or the uprooting of sprinklers).  Yet all is forgiven when, at the end of the day, Delilah lays her head on the edge of the couch and studies me patiently, waiting for a pat on the head and an invitation to jump into my lap.

Like her mum, Delilah possesses the rare binary characteristics I seek out in a working gundog – bold independence counter-balanced by an eagerness to please and learn.  We anxiously await her first shooting season – the resident quail would attest that Delilah loves hunting up birds.

Delilah is still all legs, angle, and puppy coat so is unlikely to make a conformation debut anytime soon.  But I am starting to get a glimpse of the lovely lady she is to become, having inherited her parents’ type, structure, and movement.  I look forward to watching her develop in the coming year.

Thanks to Kathi Leonhardt of Stormwatch Flat-coats for allowing me to breed Layla to her handsome and talented dog Jordan for Delilah's litter.
